STOP Water Mining!

The heinous practice of grabbing up water rights for future exploitation is a very real threat to Florida's springs, rivers, and aquifers. Adena Ranch is just one example of how this scam can be foisted on unsuspecting residents by mascarading as something else.

Solutions sought for vanishing lakes

Not every article published has all the facts straight as this article from the Miami Herald demonstrates:

As lakes dry up, state looks for solutions

This article ignores the problem-contributing culprits of excessive groundwater pumping and liberal granting of CUPs.

ACT NOW: Protect Silver Springs

Dear Friends-

Attached is the presentation Dr. Robert Knight presented to a very large group of concerned citizens gathered together last night to find out more about what is happening to our beautiful Silver Springs.  He has founded a group called the Silver Springs Alliance, Inc. to raise awareness about our future water resources and saving the springs for future generations.  As you probably know from past information I have sent you many of our springs, lakes , rivers and wetlands are in very poor health due to a low Floridan Aquifer that is caused by the current drought and the large amount of pumping from the aquifer.  There is a new consumptive use permit request from Adena Ranch which is only about 7 miles from Silver Springs to pump over 13 mgd of water from the upper Floridan Aquifer.  Silver Springs is already in serious decline and if this permit goes through it will probably be the nail in the coffin for the Springs.  The CUP will also severely impact the Ocklawaha and Silver River.  We just cannot stand by and let this happen and everyone needs to support the Silver Springs Alliance in objecting this permit.  You can join the Silver Springs Alliance for only $15 and really need your help.  You can send a check to:

    The Silver Springs Alliance, Inc.
    Post Office Box 153
    Silver Springs, FL 34489-0153

Also, Mr. Neil Chonin of the Southern Legal Council also spoke at the meeting.  The SLC is a non-profit public interest law firm that is becoming involved in the struggle to protect the Springs and Aquifer.  It was encouraging to speak with the Honorable Buddy MacKay at the meeting as he thinks if we all band together we can win this fight.  He is on the Board of Directors of the SLC .  You can find out more about the SLC on their website: www.southernlegal.org.   However, they need money to hire scientists and other legal fees to mount the best defense possible to fight this withdrawal funded by  billionaire Canadian Owner ,Frank Stronach.  If you can please help support this effort.  You can send your donation to:

    Southern Legal Counsel, Inc.
    1229 NW 12th Avenue
    Gainesville, FL 32601-4113

Thank you for your support in helping preserve one of the most precious gems on earth, Silver Springs.  Feel free to share this message with anyone you feel might be able support the legal defense or wish to join the Silver Springs Alliance.  The clock is ticking on the amount of time the SJRWMD has to approve this permit and if it is approved we have to act immediately.

Sincerely,
Jackie Host, President
Lake Area Water Alliance
